I love plants. I often refer to myself as a ”crazy plant lady” and have a hard time resisting the urge to buy every house plant I see. There are so many reasons to bring plants into your home; they instantly add personality to a space, they are an inexpensive way to add colour and texture to your room and they bring of sense of outdoors in helping create a calming feel.
For those of you lacking a green-thumb there is now an amazing variety of artificial plants out there that give you that same look and feel as real plants but without the maintenance. I am a huge fan of using artificial plants in areas of my home that get less sunlight.
If you are just starting out with bringing plants into your spaces here are a few tips for decorating with both real and artificial plants.
SOME PLANTS ARE EASIER TO TAKE CARE OF THAN OTHERS
Aloe vera, ferns, ivy and African violets are some of my favourite house plants because they are so easy to maintain. I water them once every 7-10 days and they thrive in full to partial sunlight. Succulents are great for people who aren’t as diligent about watering their plants. They only need to be watered every couple of weeks. When purchasing a plant be sure to look at the tag that comes with the plant which will tells you how often to water and how much sunlight the plant prefers. If a plant is not thriving in a particular spot try moving it to a different spot. It’s often about trial and error and finding what location works best for each plant.
Extra tip: Make sure your planters either have a drainage hole in the bottom of the pot with a plate to sit on or that they have some small stones in the bottom of the pot under the dirt to allow for excess water drainage. This will help to ensure you don't accidentally over-water and drown your plants.

ADD PERSONALITY AND COLOUR WITH YOUR PLANT ACCESSORIES
Colourful and fun patterned pots are a simple way to add some character to your space. Cool watering cans, misters and seed holders can also help add personality. There are also cool options out there for shelving to display your plants. One of my favourite my dining room was this fun owl shaped plant shelf. Plant shelves are available is tons of different shapes, sizes and styles and act as a beautiful piece of art.

Ikea is also amazing for offering both real and artificial plants as well as all the accessories you need including hanging planters at an extremely affordable price.
Other great places to find affordable plants include local reno stores and grocery stores that often have a great selection of house plants.
My final tip: When in doubt on what to use to decorate a particular spot in your house go with a plant... you won't regret it!
Happy planting everyone!
