GETTING STARTED

You find a project you know you can tackle. You buy all the supplies. You read up on blogs and websites that tell you "how to". But... you just never get around to starting. Sound familiar?

Sadly this happens to me too sometimes. My collection of craft and hardware supplies tells a tale of dozens of good-intentioned projects that I have yet to start. It can be for any number of reasons that you just don't start that project... no time, not sure the best approach to starting the project, don't have help to complete the project, etc.

Don't let these past failed attempts to start get you down! Here are a few tips that have helped me over the years with getting going on those projects:

HAVE A CLEAR VISION

No matter what kind of project you are taking on decide in advance exactly what you want to accomplish. Having a vague idea of what you want to create often leads to not knowing where to start. Of course once you get started you may need to adjust your plan or may have brilliant ideas on how to improve it but having that basic idea in place from the start will help you get moving.

For me the process of getting a clear vision involves lots of scrolling through Pinterest, reading diy blogs and watching "how to" videos. Usually my projects will involve combining inspirations from many of these sources along with adding my own ideas.

PLAN, PLAN, PLAN

What materials will you need? Will your project need an extra set of hands? Do you need special tools to complete the job? Figuring all these things out in advance will allow you to start and get momentum with your project. Having to stop part way through your project because you weren't well prepared can be discouraging and may lead you to abandoning your project all together.

BOOK IT IN YOUR CALENDAR

For me this is key! I work full time and have a 3 year old daughter so spare time is almost non-existent. But luckily for me I have an amazing husband, parents and friends all willing to help out with projects (and with entertaining the little one) so the little spare time I have can be put to good use. I will book a Saturday or Sunday to do a specific project and make sure I have my "crew" on hand to help out where needed.

I hope these tips will help motivate you to just get started with your own projects.
